While most makers truly enjoy the creative making process, for most it isn’t equally pleasant to sell their work.
Marketing takes a lot of effort. The behind the scenes of successful selling is about as varied as are the personalities of potters. How can you come up with fresh marketing ideas? Marketing is an art in itself, and it’s not obvious to have knowledge in the fields. But some instruction, reflection and training may get you on the right tracks. With so many students and makers coming through La Meridiana, we feel a demand for good marketing advice, specifically geared towards ceramic artists and potters. We found the perfect instructor for this topic in Jayson Lawfer. He has a degree in Ceramics from the United States and has been a professional potter for over 10 years. He has shown his work in various countries and has become a dealer of contemporary ceramics since 2002. Over the last 5 years, he has used his marketing skills to develop an online art brokerage business http://www.thenevicaproject.com where he buys and sells art and art collections.

JAYSON teaching

His ceramic and marketing course, to be held in October, will focus on the art of pottery and all the things so attractive about being in Italy- food, wine, site-seeing, etc. And there will be the addition about marketing one’s artwork. Jayson will discuss options that can lead to increased sales, more exposure, a better internet presence and better overall opportunities.

Art and Dance with clay, Ceramic sculpture exhibition, Clay laboratory, Clay performance, Concreta, Landart

[/Terra! Clay performance]
This year’s 6th edition of Concreta ha seen some new proposals. Our aim is educational, and we wanted to put an emphasis on the tactile and sensual qualities of clay, using those to catch peoples imagination and create a more unswerving involvement with the viewer.Clay performance - happy spectators

Terra! Was a clay performance involving a Clay laboratory open to all, followed by danced performance. Particpants created with hands, feet and clay, shaping objects which became part of the scene of the danced performance and composed a sculpture of Landart, to be delivered to time and weather.
Organized with the contribution of CABA Cultural Association, IMacelli http://www.imacelli.it Gulliver Gallery http://www.gulliverarte.com http://www.arteconcreta.eu

Concreta 2013

Glazed Stoneware Sculpture by Carlos Carle

The abstract exerts a fascination perhaps because it contains a strong force, the kind of emotive power found within all of nature. Clay is the material many contemporary artists prefer, due to its subtlety, plasticity and infinite surface possibilities. This is exactly what has drawn Orietta Mengucci to clay and she has investigated form, texture and surface profoundly in her work. She fell in love with the groggy Spanish clays we use for sculpture at La Meridiana and the rich, warm colour range that varies beautifully according to the firing type and temperature.
Orietta Mengucci http://www.oriettamengucci.it is the instructor of an stimulating sculptor workshop in August. It is about finding a personal way of expression and she is unsurpassed for guiding students in a sensitive way. Technical skill however is equally important and clay, surface and the innovative use of coloured slips will be investigated thoroughly through the participation of Pietro Maddalena http://www.pietro.net , a champ in the field. Happy throwers in marks clay classCeramic workshops can be of many kinds: Very intensive, a work holiday with accent on “holiday”, mostly relaxing with a series of cultural intersections like food – wine – food – wine –food –wine. This past workshop with Mark Hewitt had it all: a very numerous and humorous group with participants from many continents, interesting side arguments like sustainable food and the medieval writer Boccaccio, great side trips.
The core, however, couldn’t have been than the Sweet Pots!
See here what has been achieved on the throwing wheel during those two weeks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri1715EcSPk
By the way, Mark will be back at La Meridiana in 2015!
In the meantime, check out the programme of 2013, there are still many great clay workshops to come.
